College Essay For Colorado School of Mines
Colorado School of Mines is a place where I feel I can actually make a difference in the world. I came to that conclusion from the tour I took of the college. I realized then that I was standing in the college of my dreams. I was finally in a place where people enjoyed engineering and science as much as I do, and wouldn't give me blank stares when I talked excitedly about new scientific developments.
Colorado School of Mines is a great fit for me, academically, because I am extremely passionate about Science and Engineering. I want to be an innovator. From my Air-Lock trash can that I introduced at my very first Invention Convention when I was in 1st grade, to my Portable Conductivity Probe that I shared at the Colorado State Science and Engineering Fair the spring of my Junior year, I have wanted to improve the world around me and how we function in it. Many times, people have said to me, “Brandon, quit trying to reinvent the wheel!” But I think that if we don’t keep pushing against the mentality of “the way we have always done it”, then where will we be in the future? Don’t all of the most amazing breakthroughs happen when we challenge ourselves and the status quo and look at problems from a different angle? I want to continue doing that in an environment like Mines, where innovation and creativity are not only accepted but encouraged.
My road to academic success has presented it’s share of challenges. But I feel that I am prepared to succeed at Mines. I have been attending a college prep high school with a workload very similar to college, where we were taught concepts like advocacy and perseverance through rigorous academics. I have practiced perseverance endlessly, since my dyslexia has required me to work harder and longer on assignments than many of my fellow students. It has forced me to grow and adapt if I wanted to succeed. Many times I have been offered an alternate path, an easier path, in my education. I have instead chosen to challenge myself and produce work that I am proud of and evaluated at the same level as the rest of my class. Just meeting the requirements of the assignment is never my goal. I want to show my best work and deliver something extra and memorable for my teachers and my fellow students. I want them to always wonder, “What will Brandon do for this presentation?” I continue, though, to persevere as my projects become increasingly challenging and refine my process and product to meet the highest standards.
Mines to me, feels like the place I need to be to get the best education possible so that I can achieve my goals of becoming a Chemical Engineer. At Mines, I feel that I will be prepared for my future, as well as impact our world with positive changes and continue to challenge what is accepted.
