Energy and place
This project was an exploration into our sense of place and how energy affects it. We started off this exploration with learning about the environmental ethics had such one we prefer. Then we started connecting the energy portion of the project to chemistry. We learned about uranium mining, fracking, and hydroelectric and how these sources of energy affect our sense of place.
My environmental ethic has evolved a lot over this project originally I could not find an environmental ethics that fit me. But over time I realized that preservationism is the environmental ethic that I believe is the best. I found my sense of place essay challenging because I have a hard time with righting but because of the fact that I was able to continue a story that I had already begun writing it became a lot easier. I grew as a person during this project because i learned were all of our energy came from and how it affects the environment and people.
I am proud of my visual peace because it followed my environmental ethic by preserving the work the other students in a video documentary of the projects. My take action project may be used to inspire future students and help them come up with what they want to do for their project. My documentary may also help students raise awareness for their project by getting it out to the world.

THE CHASM
After I woke up, I walked outside and it was raining. It was cold out. I looked out at the moon in the sky-- a chunk was missing, humanity's first attempt at ripping apart a planet with gravity tethers and a very large ship. Humanity has never been able to preserve anything beautiful. Then processing the chunks for the resources, after our greed reached past humanity’s birthplace: Earth. Earth, The third planet from the SOL-- if you can call it a planet anymore. Earth, now resembling its sister Mars, a husk of its former life-giving beauty, a dust hole with limited oxygen in its atmosphere and high radiation levels from one too many wars. I guess I need to stop getting distracted by a world I can't even see in the night sky. I step out of my ship, I use it as a place to sleep. It can't be used for much more now since it ran out of antimatter months ago and is now powered by the station’s solar panels. The rain froze and hit the ground, such strange weather on this planet-- one minute it’s raining and the next it’s snowing. I looked out over the cliff edge. Down a couple hundred feet was a large dark chasm --I don’t even know why its there. I think its an abandoned mine, but I can't really tell. Once I even tried to find the records for the station but anything referencing the pit was redacted. I continued walking, the snow crunching under my boots. I look up and continue over to the research station. The station was a small building on the peak of the tallest mountain on this planet, on the edge of the polar ice cap right at the base of the mountain, and on one side was a lush jungle that probably explains the random weather up here. I wish this station was in that jungle but the strong magnetic field completely fries any technology that gets close, the pore sucker that was here first found that out first hand. I was stationed here after that incident as his replacement. I was getting closer to the station and was opening the large metal door. I entered the station’s air lock, the door closes followed by a loud hiss as the airlock replaces the toxic methane from the upper atmosphere with clean(ish) oxygen. My suit detected the presence of sufficient oxygen, which caused it to depressurise and collapse my helmet. The room lit up as the generator kicked in. The heaters fired up and began to make the room habitable. Once the room was warm, I hit a switch on my suit and in a loud hiss the helmet collapsed into my pack and I continued forward. The computers begin to boot up, and with a loud grinding sound the metal panels lift from the outside window which was now covered with frost. As the defrosters kicked in a puddle started to formed on the concrete. Once the computers were up and running I noticed the blinking light, then I realized that it was a message from Command. One day later, I thought as I sat down to read it. Once I opened the file, what I heard scared me. The monotone AI voice stated that Earth’s core had destabilized and imploded from over- mining and was now a molten ball that was highly radioactive. The AI also reported that it had lost connection with command that had been on Earth. Then the transmission ended abruptly in static and that was followed by silence. It took that moment of dead silence for me to I realize what it meant-- command was gone I had no home and I was stuck on this hell hole of a planet. It took me some time to recover my sanity. Once I did, I decided to set up a distress beacon in hope that maybe someone will get it and save me. I gathered what resources I had and prepared for the long wait. “Personal log 4232256. It has been 30 days now and I feel my sanity slipping away, with nothing to do I just wait then I started to hear voices, whispers from the darkness that reminded me of the chasm. There is something about that chasm that is getting to me. I don’t know what it is.” A few days later, I decided to go and explore the chasm so I could have something to put my mind to.I gathered my supplies and entered the airlock, which hissed when it decompressed. I almost forgot to seal my helmet before this and I could have died from it. I walk out onto the snow, which was shining with an untouched beauty from the light of the two suns. it was getting late and the suns were starting to fall behind the horizon, sadly where I was going was not going to be beautiful. I walked out to the chasm’s edge and looked down. Then I realized it had gotten bigger somehow and this made me worry. As I inched closer to the edge I heard a loud pop and the ice ledge that was under me gave way. I looked up at the newspaper, the sunlight illuminating the words. I started reading off the articles: “The outer colonies attack again, kid vaporizes his house, new laws in place”. I mumbled a quote “Meanwhile the world never changes but still keeps turning”; I looked up to see the room start to get dark and then go completely dark. All I saw was darkness, just darkness, and I started to hear a low hiss. I started to feel dizzy, the blood rushing to my head. I managed to get a small amount of clarity as my suit’s power came back on. The light from my HUD nearly blinded me. I heard an alarm and I try to focus on the red warning, but my vision was blurry and I see what seems to be a red blob in front of my face. I closed my eyes and shook my head. I opened my eyes again and my vision cleared up. Then I realized that my suit was losing air and fast. The indicator went from 80% to 63% and was still dropping. I realized that I was hanging by a power cable that was sparking. Then I started to panic, scrambling to get my boot loose from the cable. I pulled out my knife and managed to cut my leg loose from the cable. I fell to the ground with a thud as I landed on hard ice. I got up and immediately tried to find the leak, that was when I found the ice shard in my back. I managed to muster the strength to pull it out, the air that was leaking got worse but I covered the hole with my hand. I pulled off the repair tape out of my small bag and patched up the hole, hoping it would last long enough for me to get to safety. I started looking for a way out. I saw I only have 41% of my oxygen left, that would give me just about 10 hours left. How did oxygen become such a commodity? Wasn't earth once full of oxygen? Did we seriously breath it all away? My thoughts wonder as I descend into the dark cave.

My project was to create a documentary that showcased the work students were conducting in the community. This project reflected my environmental ethic by preserving the projects in video format. My vision for this project was to raise awareness for the take action project as a hole and make it easier for students to get there word out about their projects. I went out and took video of other projects and having students send in video, then I edited it.
My project connects to the essential question of “How do your sense of place, your environmental ethic, and your understanding of our energy needs influence your perception of human’s use of Earth’s resources and your own lifestyle decisions?” by showing that I believe that the structure of how we use resources is flawed and how we take our environment for granted. My project shouse this by getting the word out that change is possible and that if these students can do it so can you. I used video of students making change large or small in the community to achieve this message. Video's like Magic Nicks clean nest initiative or Dosin zick's upcycled bench project.
This project has helped me realize that we as humanity can break this extrinsic value we place on the planet. Getting to witness students taking action and making a difference really showed me that we can make change though it may be hard. All in all it was amazing to see animas students get out into the community and make a difference large or small.

What is the purpose of your existence?
What is happiness and what makes you happy?
What does it mean to live a meaningful life?
To what extent can literature shape your personal philosophy on happiness and meaning?

Native American Historical Inquiry
Our Project’s Essential Question: How can an examination of multiple sources and perspectives lead to
a more enlightened understanding of history AND contemporary social, cultural and political realities?
a more enlightened understanding of history AND contemporary social, cultural and political realities?
Journal and seminar prep will be added as soon as I have access to the files!
Reflection
For this project we had to read multiple reading like Sherman Alexie’s The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. From these readings we saw multiple different viewpoints from different Native Americans. We also watched a movie called Reel Injun, where we learned about how Native Americans are portrayed in film and in the media. For all these readings and videos we had to create journal entries to apply critical thought to what we were learning. As a culmination to this project we had a seminar where we were able to learn from each other to help us get a better understanding on the subjects of the project.
One of the key takeaways from this project was to challenge history because it is normally written by the victor. Because of that my understanding changed about Native Americans and Christopher Columbus. I learned about how Native Americans were brutally killed, but we never see that in the textbook. When i was reading First Person, First People, the Dartmouth student essays, I felt rage when I read the part about the female student getting assaulted.
In the Socratic seminar we discussed all of the readings and content we had seen in the weeks before, allowing us to share and present the feelings and ideas we had accumulated over the course of the project. During this seminar we went through and talked about multiple topics like, “Where do you think these stereotypes come from?” To which a student replied with a reference to Reel Injun and gave prospective on that. We also talked about the recent uproar about the name of the Redskins football team and what should be done about it. Near the end we began to talk about the structure of reservations and how the reservations divide up the money from the federal government. This discussion was aided by my friend Noah. From these discussions I was able to really develop my ideas on the subject and I liked that.
The essential question for this project was, “How can an examination of multiple sources and perspectives lead to a more enlightened understanding of history AND contemporary social, cultural and political realities?” Based on the seminar I learned that we need to look at the whole picture and not just the things that are force fed to us from the textbooks and the media. We need to look at all sides of the story and come up with a conclusion on our own. If we do that we can decipher what is reality out of the stories and truly understand what happened in the past.

Artist Statement
My political campaign video represents my perspective on NSA surveillance, which I think is wrong and against what this country stands for.
I used Agent Smith from the Matrix as a symbol of control because he is immediately recognizable.
The tone of my video is intended to be dark and have a subliminal messaging type of feel. The music also creates a epic sound scape.
I decided to use After -Effects to create a video because it allowed me to use the broken glichy effects that I wanted and I did this by color shifting and varying effects.

Our government wants us to give up our secrets so we can be “more secure”. Is this notion violating the 4th amendment?
Since technology has advanced over the years so has the government’s way of gathering intelligence. The government used to find threats by careful investigative work. Now they use systems that collect mass data and store it for later use. What are they collecting? Well one system is collecting phone records like date, time, duration, caller, and the call receiver. The other system is collecting what you search for on the internet, what pages you go to, and even what you are actively typing in your email before you send it.
The government’s argument is that the data is not against the 4th amendment because it obtains data that has left the users’ device and is in the “cloud”, which means it is open for collection. They stated that the purpose of this surveillance is to prevent teririsum and crime. They also state that it is a good way to keep crime to a minimum.
There are a couple problems with this argument. The first one is the fact that users are not willingly giving out this information. This is like the program that collects all phone records from users who use a service like Verizon where they have no choice but to have their data collected if they want to make a call. The second problem with this is the fact that the NSA has forced software companies to have a software “back door” in most operating systems like Windows, Mac-os, ios, and Android. These “backdoors” give access to all the files on a system. This basically means that they are taking data that has not left the computer yet and that goes against the 4th amendment. I have personally found this file in the windows registry.
There is a philosophy that Jeremy Benthum, an 18th century philosopher, developed which perhaps justifies violating peoples’ rights. Bentham’s views on Utilitarianism state that. “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.” I strongly disagree with this because this vew is violating the rights of everyone in America. The fact that this surveillance program is for “stopping terrorists” is absurd. How is collecting what everyone has searched or what files are on their computers helping national security? This program is not even effective at achieving its purpose because it has had no successes.
I was recently watching a debate from intelligence2 where two were debating the topic “Spy On Me, I'd Rather Be Safe”. One of the “against the motion” debaters, David Cole who was on the "against” side posted an article prior to the debate were he talks about the types of atrocities that our government is doing. As David Cole states,
“The NSA has entered into agreements with nine Internet service providers—including Google, YouTube, Facebook, Yahoo, Skype, Apple and AOL—to allow the NSA to obtain from them all sorts of private information communicated over their networks.”
It’s disturbing that this type of surveillance is happening and we as a people are fine with it. For the government to force companies to relinquish this personal information is just simply wrong
One other problem is this type of surveillance is creating a division between people who believe that the surveillance is against the 4th amendment that forbids search and seizure without a warrant. There is argument saying that the government is taking the data without a warrant thus violating the 4th amendment. To fix this issue we need to convince the general masses that there is issue and that they need to not be complacent. The government also needs to reformat their system to not take all the data on the internet. Data from sites like Facebook and Twitter is acceptable because everything on these sites has been willingly posted by the person, so it fits both arguments.
The government is breaking the 4th amendment and if we don’t take action then we are the ones at fault. If we remain complacent we will be saying to the government “that it is ok to do things that violate our rights, we won’t do anything about it” and that is bad. Another problem is the “I have nothing to hide” mentality. The first step to fixing this problem is admitting we have one.

Reflection
The purpose of the project was to evaluate a current issue and develop an opinion that can be backed up with evidence. First we needed to do research on a topic of our choosing. This could range from NSA spying to gay rights, but did not need to be a current issue. Next we needed to develop our research into a thesis, and ultimately into an Op-ed article. After our Op-ed was done, we moved onto creating an art piece that included multiple forms of rhetoric.
From this project I learned about how to look at the other side of an argument and not just the side that I support. I learned this when watching an Intelligence-Squared video where one of the debaters brought up some good points, which he backed up with evidence, and caused me think more critically about my position.
The part of my project that I am most proud of is the visual piece where I created a video displaying my opinion. I am happy with this piece because it uses most of my knowledge in Adobe After Effects. I also spent a great deal of time working on the project and figuring how it wold go together.
If i had more time I would have refined my Op-ed more and I also wold have made my video cleaner. To start, I wold optimize my Op-ed to remove unecessary words to make it more concise. For my art project, I would make the transitions neater and I would also clean up the edges of objects in the composition. I would also make it look more professional if given more time.
